Wings of Karen founder, Kristi Blair, travelled to Africa last year as part of a delegation led by UW Medicine, Dr. Julie Gralow and WE CAN, to help advocate and empower woman facing breast cancer there. With the help of Wings of Karen the "Sister Stories" video was produced to demonstrate that cancer is treatable and survivable. This video used as an advocacy tool to support the efforts of advocates in the region to raise awareness
and build support for accessible cancer care services. So much can be done to improve the situation for women dealing with cancer, and much of it is non-clinical.
Beyond beating all the odds to seek out and get treatment, women must confront pervasive misinformation and a cancer stigma that has them ostracized from their communities.
As a part of this year’s Bra Dash, we can help combat some of these stigmas in a very simple way - by providing bras that will be fit with a prosthetic for these courageous women that have received a mastectomy, enabling them to get back into their communities and thrive. A bra, it's a game changer. WE CAN, help. You can decorate a bra for the race, but consider donating a new or gently used one, too, and you'll be a game changer in a deserving woman's life in Africa.
